Keeping Kids Entertained During Lockdown
As Malaysians continue to remain indoors to help to curb the widespread COVID-19, children are at the losing end of the stick as they can’t go out and play. Luckily for them, we have curated a plethora of family-friendly activities that you can practise indoors to keep cabin fever and boredom at bay.
Try Old-School Games
Children these days are too engrossed with their mobile devices and gaming gadgets. Since we are stuck indoors, we say shake things up by putting all the technology aside and go old-school. Whip out the board games like Scrabble or Monopoly that you've casted away until now.
Practise Daily Journaling
Practise journaling everyday on what you and your family have been up to. Rope your children into it. Feel free to write, scribble or doodle away and express about your day, what you did and ate. Not only will it be good for your mental health, it will be fun to read them again.
Cook With Your Kids
Cooking can be fun, especially when you involve your kids in the process. It’s a win-win situation as your kids will be entertained and a meal done and dusted with. Try your hand at a burnt cheesecake, cupcakes or Pad Thai.
Juggling working from home, taking care of your kids and cooking can be quite the feat. Solve this woe by learning to meal prep during the weekend. It will save you lots of time and money while ensuring your family gets a nutritious meal. You can involve your children in the cooking process to make things fun.
Have Movie Nights
After a tiring day, there’s nothing better than to wind down by watching a movie. Get everyone’s opinion on what to watch, make some snacks and gather everyone in front of the TV. This will be something your kids will look forward to and enjoy.
Belt Out To Tunes
You don’t have to go out to karaoke centres when you can throw your own concert at home. Order a couple of microphones, encourage your kids to choose songs they like and voila! Your very own musical showcase.
Try To Be Productive Everyday
Being productive at home can prove a challenge but it’s necessary. Make a to-do list of what you want you and your kids to accomplish that day. For example, you can plant some vegetables and get your kids involved in it, conduct a painting session or re-decorate your home.
Help Your Kids With Homework
The silver lining of this pandemic is being able to spend more time with your kids. Take this opportunity to educate and help them with their homework. Create fun ways to teach them maths or science and they’ll be happy to learn.
Create a Chore Wheel
Encourage every member of your family, including your kids to pick up their weight by creating a chore wheel. A chore wheel is basically equal slice pie charts (there are templates online) and it’s intended for all chores to take equal amount of effort and executed on equal frequency. Not only will this help you around the house but also teach your kids accountability and discipline.
Camp Out in the Yard
If you have a yard at home, it could serve as ground for a fun activity — camping. Assemble a tent and spend the night with your children appreciating the night sky and teach them about constellations and stars.
